Queen Caroline Gardens Chapel, also known as Asylum has to be one of my favorite wedding venues in South London! Despite being called Asylum, the grade II listed site was in fact an old folks home for retired pub landlords and dates back to 1827 and is a real gem so when Anna and Alex first asked us along to see the venue I was so excited. Fast forward 9 months and we had the pleasure of helping bring Anna’s vision to life together with Van Dough who were also catering on the day.
Dotty was parked at the front at the venue alongside Van Dough’s vintage Citroen H Van. The portico at the front of this venue makes for a perfect drinks reception setting and so we set up our little vintage tea station here. The tables were laid with vintage lace tablecloths and the china tea cups and saucers took pride of place alongside vintage milk jugs, and sugar bowls. Dotty was looking very smart with her best bunting and the aroma of freshly ground coffee was almost hypnotic. Alex arrived ahead of time and looking very nervous but it wasn’t long before his beautiful bride to be arrived in style on the back of a restored Italian Lamretta with her Dad. Her calf length vintage dress was to die for and I couldn’t help but notice her shoes too, very nice!
I was told that it was the Italian tradition for guests to greet the bride before the wedding which was something I wasn’t aware so you do learn something new everyday. Once the guests had been ushered in Anna made her way round to the back of the venue where she was walked down the aisle by her father. Following the ceremony, guests flooded the portico and we served tea and coffee. Whilst the drink reception was in full swing a few of our members of staff helped to transform the chapel ready for the sit down meal. The tables and chairs were re-organised and the tables laid according to Anna’s instructions. The grooms mother had done a fabulous job with the flowers and they really did bring the venue to life. Guests were treated to cheese and cured meat platters with artisan breads followed by freshly baked pizza’s and home made salads.
Anna & Alex had opted not to have a traditional wedding cake and instead had asked us to bake some home made cakes and scones. Anna has a severe nut allergy so we had opted for lemon drizzle cake, double chocolate cake and clotted cream and jam scones. We also made some gluten free chocolate cakes at the request of the bride.
At 7pm two double decker buses came to collect the guests as they were moving onto an evening venue in Vauxhall. I’m pleased to say that all the cake was eaten and few pieces were even wrapped and sneaked onto the bus, shhhhhhh!!

Thank you so much for everything you did for us on Saturday. We could see how hard everyone had worked and we had a wonderful day, even better than I had pictured it. When I walked into the transformed room with the tables and chairs set out, I couldn’t believe how pretty it looked.
Your cakes had rave reviews, as did your coffee… And Italians are a very tough coffee crowd to please!
